March 11, 2010

To our Members, Sponsors, and Friends,

Spring is slowly making it's way to Atlanta. The one benefit of this long winter has been a decreased desire to go enjoy the outdoors while looking out the office window.

We had a great speaker in February. David Altig from the Atlanta Federal Reserve gave us his insights into the current state of the economy and, unfortunately, evidence showing that we could be in for either a quick or a slow recovery!

We also had a fun joint meeting at the Atlanta Thrashers game with AFP (Assoc of Financial Professionals). We met on the Hawks practice court under the arena and listened to Phil Ebinger, CFO for the Atlanta Spirit with his insights on what it's like to manage the finances of professional sports teams. We also got to see the Thrashers beat the Florida Panthers, 4-2.

March Meeting
The March meeting is on Tuesday, the 23rd at the Buckhead Club. We will be handing out our annual academic awards to 4 deserving students from local Atlanta universities. Our speaker is Dennis Beresford, currently a professor of Accounting at the University of Georgia and previously chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) for 10 years. If you have not yet signed up, please do so as soon as possible. Register now for the March meeting.

Sponsor Events
BDO -
I was fortunate to have been able to attend the Tax Symposium sponsored by BDO on February 26th. The lunch speaker was David Walker, former Comptroller of the Currency and CEO of the Peter Peterson Foundation, a non-partisan group working to create awareness of the growing urgency of some key financial issues facing us, including the national debt.

IBM - Prior to our regular April 20 meeting, IBM will be hosting FEI members from 3:30 - 5:30 at the Buckhead Club and discussing the results of their 2010 Global CFO Study which includes input from over 1,900 CFOs worldwide. In addition, they will present business strategies and ideas for senior Finance executives to lever to make their enterprises more competitive and efficient. The event qualifies for 2 hours of CPE and more information is available on the FEI Atlanta website.

FREE CPE!!!
FEI National has given us 2 one-year subscriptions to FERFPros Online, normally a $289 value. We are going to have a drawing for the 2 subscriptions and will draw the winners at the March meeting. If you would like to be included in the drawing, please send an e-mail to admin@feiatlanta.org with CPE DRAWING - {YOUR NAME} in the subject line before Tuesday, March 23rd. You will also be able to enter your name at the registration table at the meeting on the 23rd. Good luck!
